A lipoedema refers to a fat distribution disorder or fat deposit disorder, which leads to a swelling of fat cells in the tissue. As a result, more water and proteins are kept in and between cells. Additionally, the skin’s elasticity increases and the veno-arterial reflex decrease, leading to the lymphatic system being overloaded.
In general, a lipoedema is categorised into three stages that commonly affect women only. The third stage is described as the lipo-lymphoedema. The lipo-lymphoedema details the combination of lip- and lymphoedemata. Here, the swelling of fat cells will eventually lead to a change of the lymphatic system. Thus, impaired drainage of the lymphatic system will generate a lymphoedema, in addition to the lipoedema already present in the tissue.
