Lymphoedema

The lymphatic system is responsible for the flow of the so-called lymphatic pressure. The lymphatic pressure contains those substances that can only be drained from the cells through the lymphatic system. Once the transport capacity that allows the lymphatic pressure to flow is reached, a build-up of fluids arises in the tissue. This build-up is rich in protein, which is why we speak of a lymphoedema.

Types of lymphoedemata:
  • Primary lymphoedema: encompasses all lymphoedemata that originated due to an innate weakness of the lymphatic system
  • Secondary lymphoedema: this includes those lymphoedemata that originated due to an existing condition
